Free Lunch every Thursday!
Thursday, February 3rd, 2011Lunch in Downtown Riverside for $11, including tip!
Thursday, January 27th, 2011I just had a great lunch at La Cascada restaurant in Downtown Riverside–two sopes covered in shredded beef, guacamole, lettuce and pico de gallo served with rice and beans. It came out to me fresh, hot, and in about 4 minutes. I just had the time to mix a sugar packet into my cold iced tea and try a few chips with salsa, and bam; lunch is served! My food, including drink, tax, and tip— $11.02
So you may ask, what are sopes? Wikipedia’s definition is:
sope (pronounced “SOH-peh”) is a traditional Mexican dish originating in the city of Culiacán. It is an antojito which at first sight looks like an unusually thick tortilla with vegetables and meat toppings. The base is made from a circle of fried masa of ground maize soaked in lime (also used as the basis for tamales and tortillas) with pinched sides. This is then topped with refried beans and crumbled cheese, lettuce, onions, red or green sauce (salsa, made with chiles or tomatillos respectively), and acidified cream. Sometimes other ingredients (mostly meat) are also added to create different tastes and styles of sopes. Most sopes are roughly the size of a fist.
One of my friends also went with the sopes and he agreed that they were, indeed, delicious.

Thai Restaurant off the beaten track in Riverside // BYOB!!
Tuesday, November 16th, 2010Last night my girlfriend and I had dinner at a cool little spot on Brockton Ave. It looks like it was built inside of a converted home and it reflects this in its feel and ambiance. The service was great and the food was delicious!
We started with the appetizer combo. Matt, our server, brought out the dish promptly and pipping hot! The egg-rolls were fried to perfection and were not oily. I also enjoyed the fried won-tons. The platter also came with fried tofu and shrimp rolls. My only suggestion would be to add one or two more dipping sauces to contrast the sweet and sour sauce the platter came with.
One of my favorite Thai dishes are the wonderful soups, and the Tom Yum Pak soup I ordered did not disappoint. It had just the right about of heat and I just love lemon grass.
We finish the meal with an order of Pad Sew Ewe. This was stir-fried flat noodles with egg, broccoli, carrots, and black soy sauce. We ordered it with chicken and add a generous amount of the assorted chili sauces. Be careful with some of these, they do bite, and Thai chilies are among the hottest in the world–but they do compliment the dish perfectly.
FYI…Bann Thai does NOT have beer, wine, or cocktails. The cool part; our server, Matt, said we can bring in our own! Luckily I had an extra bottle of wine in my truck left over from a birthday party I went to this weekend. So enjoy this place and BYOB/W!
